چکیده

The main objectives of the research are to characterize the wind-induced resonant and slowly-varying (quasi-static) responses of a tall building under ambient wind excitations based on GPS measurements. The equipment used includes two sets of orthogonally aligned accelerometers, two GPS receivers and an ultrasonic anemometer. The natural frequencies of the wind-induced vibration of the tall building are determined by carrying out spectral analysis of the measured time series of acceleration. The time series are also used to estimate the structural damping with the random decrement technique (RDT). The results show that GPS can be effectively used to measure the resonant and slowly-varying responses of tall buildings with 3D mode shapes under wind excitations. The results from the GPS and the accelerometers agree well with each other in both the time and frequency domains.

Integration of GPS, Accelerometer and Optical Fiber Sensors for Structural Deformation Monitoring

Monitoring the response of structures, especially tall buildings, under severe loading conditions is an important requirement for the validation of their design and construction, as well as being a maintenance concern. Traditionally such response has been measured using accelerometers. However it is impossible to measure the static or quasi-static components of movement with such sensors. An in...

GPS in Pioneering Dynamic Monitoring of Long-Period Structures

Global Positioning System (GPS) technology with 10–20-Hz sampling rates allows scientifically justified dynamic measurements of relative displacements of long-period structures. The displacement response of a simulated tall building in real time and permanent deployment of GPS units at the roof of a building are described. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first permanent deployment o...

How Far Could Gps Go in Monitoring Structural Response to Wind Events?

Two techniques have been applied increasingly in recent years for monitoring the response of tall buildings to wind: the traditional accelerometer and GPS. The focus of this paper is to study how the two sensors perform relative to each other, and in particular the value of GPS measurements in improving wind effect modelling. The test site is a 192m high office tower in downtown Sydney (with a ...

Integration of GPS, Accelerometer and Optical Fibre Sensors for Structural Deformation Monitoring

An integrated system comprising GPS, accelerometer, and optical fibre sensors has been proposed to monitor structural deformation in order to assess the integrity of the structure. The GPS and accelerometer sensors have been installed on a 108m tall steel tower, and data have been collected during Typhoon No. 21 on 1 October 2002, at 10Hz and 20Hz rates respectively. The wind induced deformatio...

Wind Interference Effect on Tall Building

When a building is located in an urban area, it is exposed to a wind of different characteristics then wind over an open terrain. This is development of turbulent wake region behind an upstream building. The interaction with upstream building can produce significant changes in the response of the tall building. Here, in this paper, an attempt has been made to study wind induced interference eff...
